Blog Proj Week 7

I sort of went down a rabbit hole this week when I noticed something interesting in the comment section of several Animation Studios posts. See the Facebook comment below. It is a link to a petition to #SaveSplashMountain. I had no idea what it meant so I investigated. It is an online petition asking Disney not to close the Splash Mountain attraction due to its association with the 1946 Disney movie, “Song of the South.” Apparently, the movie has been “cancelled,” so to speak, because of its racist undertones. The characters of Uncle Remus and Tar Baby, along with script and the dialogue, have made the Disney Company no longer comfortable with the attractions that reference the film. They have decided to reimagine that part of the park to reflect the movie “Princess and the Frog,” starring Disney’s first black Princess, Tiana.  I’ve never seen “Song of the South” so I can’t comment with firsthand knowledge about the historical racism, but I have seen “Princess and the Frog” and I can just imagine all the wonderful ways that Disney can lean into the story to create cool park attractions! So, after climbing out of the rabbit hole, I realized how comments aren’t always posted to directly engage with the others also commenting on a post but can be used to encourage people to follow each other to other parts of the world wide web!
